“Songs from the past and the Holy Spirit” is the first album as a leader by Verona-based vibraphonist Paolo Peruzzi. The music on the album is original and is played by a group that pursues music with determination as the driving force behind everything else. The encounter with extraordinary souls has allowed the music to be forthright, spontaneous and simple, the natural meeting point of emotional intelligence and creative thinking.

PAOLO PERUZZI

In the words of the NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington, Paolo Peruzzi (b1994 in Verona, Italy) is a vibraphone player “with the curious and inquisitive nature to push the genre forward”. Kris Davis describes him as “extraordinarily talented, hardworking, curious, supportive of his peers”. Founder in 2015 of the multi-awarded chamber percussion ensemble ‘Palladrum’, in 2018 and 2020, Peruzzi was commissioned by OTO – Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico (Vicenza, Italy), to write, arrange, and perform the repertoire for two concerts dedicated to his instrument. He premiered the music at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza (UNESCO World Heritage), leading the OTO soloists ensemble. After graduating in 2019 at the Arrigo Pedrollo Music Conservatory (Vicenza, Italy), Peruzzi went on to pursue a performance diploma at the Berklee College of Music (’23 graduate), studying and play alongside artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Kris Davis, Terri Lyne Carrington, Matt Stevens, David Friedman, Kenny Werner, Francisco Mela, Pietro Tonolo. From his second semester and until his graduation, Paolo was part of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, whose mission is to support and sustain a cultural transformation in jazz, with the commitment to recruit, teach, mentor, and advocate for musicians seeking to study or perform jazz, with gender justice and racial justice as guiding principles. Paolo Peruzzi is the awardee at the first ‘Tomorrow’s Jazz’ competition, presented by Veneto Jazz in conjunction with the Veneto Jazz Festival.
